BULGARIA AND THE HOLOCAUST- the fragility of goodness // a symposium, exhibition and cultural even
Unlike other Nazi Germany allies or German-occupied countries (excluding Denmark), Bulgaria managed to save its entire 48,000-strong Jewish population during World War II from deportation to concentration camps. Based on the unique story of the Bulgarian Jews in the period 1940-1943, this exhibition demonstrates the crucial importance of mass civic action of the non-Jewish majority against the very principle of anti-Semitism and in defense of their own civic society as the only efficient means to defeat Nazism successfully and prevent the rise of political intolerance. This exhibit opening will also include a musical performance by the UCLA Bulgarian Choir at 4:30pm. In addition, there will be a screening of The Optimist, followed by a Q&A by the director of the film beginning at 6:30pm.
